SUMMARY:Inclusivity in Focus: "Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution" Screening
DESCRIPTION:A coalition of Muskegon Disability Rights and Service Organizations present: A public screening of Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution at the Frauenthal Center in Downtown Muskegon. \nA reception begins at 5:30pm\, with nonprofit exhibitors\, hors d’oeuvres\, and a cash bar. We will start the movie at 6:30pm and the film will be followed by a panel discussion with members of the Muskegon Disability Community. \nLearn how disability inclusion can help foster innovation\, enhance your reputation\, and create real\, positive impacts in your community. \nDirectors Note:\n“In the early 1970s\, teenagers with disabilities faced a future shaped by isolation\, discrimination and institutionalization. Camp Jened\, a ramshackle camp “for the handicapped” (a term no longer used) in the Catskills\, exploded those confines. Jened was their freewheeling Utopia\, a place with summertime sports\, smoking and make-out sessions awaiting everyone\, and campers experienced liberation and full inclusion as  human beings. Their bonds endured as many migrated West to Berkeley\, California — a hotbed of activism where friends from Camp Jened realized that disruption\, civil disobedience\, and political participation could change the future for millions. \n\n\nCrip Camp is the story of one group of people and captures one moment in time. There are hundreds\, if not thousands\, of other equally important stories from the Disability Rights Movement that have not yet received adequate attention. We are committed to using the film’s platform to amplify additional narratives in the disability rights and disability justice communities – with a particular emphasis on stories surrounding people of color and other intersectionally marginalized communities. We stand by the creed of nothing about us\, without us. For too long\, too many were excluded\, and it is time to broaden the number of voices and share the mic.” – Jim LeBrecht and Nichole Newnham\n\n\n\n \nPlease RSVP below. \nContent Disclaimer: Crip Camp is a documentary that contains mature themes\, including discussions of sex\, drug use\, and strong language. Additionally\, the film features historical footage that may include depictions of violence and ableist discrimination. Viewer discretion is advised. A facilitated discussion will follow the screening to provide a space for reflection and support. \nParking: Pioneer Resources will be providing accessible transportation to the door of the Frauenthal Center for people who park at the Muskegon Farmers Market. This will run from 5:15 to 10:15 pm.
